What is Open Graph?
Open Graph is a protocol originally created by Facebook that enables any web page to become a rich object in a social graph. When you share a link on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or other platforms, the Open Graph meta tags determine how your content appears in the preview.
Essential Open Graph Tags
- og:title - The title of your content as it should appear in the share
- og:description - A brief description of the content
- og:image - The image URL that will be displayed (recommended: 1200x630 pixels)
- og:url - The canonical URL of your content
- og:type - The type of content (website, article, video, etc.)
- og:site_name - The name of your website
Twitter Card Tags
Twitter uses its own meta tags (twitter:card, twitter:title, twitter:description, twitter:image) but will fall back to Open Graph tags if Twitter-specific tags are not present.
Best Practices
- Always use HTTPS URLs for images
- Use images at least 1200x630 pixels for best display
- Keep titles under 60 characters
- Keep descriptions under 155 characters
- Test your pages with this debugger before sharing
