What are UTM Parameters?
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags added to URLs that help you track the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns in analytics tools like Google Analytics. They tell you exactly where your traffic is coming from and which campaigns are performing best.
The 5 UTM Parameters
utm_source (Required)
Identifies which site or platform sent the traffic. Examples: google, facebook, newsletter, linkedin.
utm_medium (Required)
Identifies the marketing medium or channel. Examples: cpc (cost-per-click), social, email, organic, referral.
utm_campaign (Required)
Identifies the specific campaign, promotion, or marketing initiative. Examples: spring_sale, product_launch, black_friday.
utm_term (Optional)
Identifies paid search keywords. Useful for tracking which keywords drive conversions in paid search campaigns.
utm_content (Optional)
Differentiates similar content or links within the same ad. Useful for A/B testing and content-targeted ads.
Best Practices
- Be consistent: Use the same naming conventions across all campaigns
- Use lowercase: UTM parameters are case-sensitive; lowercase prevents duplicates
- No spaces: Use underscores or hyphens instead of spaces
- Be descriptive: Make campaign names clear and identifiable
- Track everything: Add UTMs to all external links for complete data
Example UTM URL
https://example.com/page?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=summer_sale
This URL tells you that the visitor came from Facebook, through social media, as part of your summer sale campaign.
